Keeping It Under Your Hat

Dreamer: Gene

Lorna, 22

I recently had a dream and I am confused about a hat that was in my dream.

Basically the dream was about a party in my house with a group of my friends. At the end of the night they all went home but I realized that one girl had left her hat behind. I knew that I had to get it back to her as soon as possible.

I'd be grateful if you could give me some interpretations of the hat symbol.

A few weeks ago I was getting on very well with the girl who appeared in my dream. There was a chance of a relationship between us (according to her friend). Anyway about two weeks ago there was a misunderstanding between us, not a row or anything, just crossed communications. I saw her a few times the next week and I was getting slightly different energies between us. I really wanted to talk to her and explain the misunderstanding, but we never got the chance to be alone to talk. This disappointed me.

Then last week we were at a party and we got on much better, like before. I still didn't get to explain to her though. It was two nights after this party that I had this dream. I woke up feeling happy about the dream, and I must admit that I would be interested in a relationship with her.

Mr. Hagen's Reply: Fear of Rejection -or- The Talking Cure

The hat in its own right, or as a piece of clothing, could have many meanings. Your guest might have been "taking her hat off to you". This would be a sign of recognition. A hat could also signify a social role.

It could also have an erotic meaning. You should remember that it was your dream and therefore you arranged to have her leave the hat. If the hat has an erotic significance it could reflect your desire to have further contact with the other person. Returning the hat is an excuse to make that contact. This does not mean, however, that the person who left the hat wants to have further contact with you.

The fear of rejection is a powerful motivator, yet the sooner you have that talk, probably the better it will be, instead of "keeping it under your hat".

Hope these thoughts are of help and provide some insight,
Mark H.
